About

WHY ESTUARIES

Estuaries are places where freshwater meets saltwater. They are where salmon transition and where nutrients coming from land become incorporated into the marine food web. Stream estuaries in Puget Sound drain an area comparable to what rivers drain, they represent a greater length of shoreline and they are largely overlooked. Urban stream estuaries contain potential that can easily be incorporated into urban design to everyone’s benefit. We would all benefit by doing a better job of protecting and restoring urban streams and their estuaries.
